Each month we will be highlighting one of the swing clubs/teams that are part of University Swing |US|! Some questions are serious, some are silly, but each month we will change it up! Get to know students across the country.

JUNE HIGHLIGHT: ANSWERED BY CLUB CAPTAIN ELIZABETH LLOYD (Pictured top right)

Questions:

1. How long ago did you start?

- We are going into our 6th year as a club!

2. On average, how many regular students come to class each week?

- It depends on the semester! During the fall we have anywhere from 10-15 people attending class, because of the academic West Coast Swing course that happens in the Fall as well. During the Spring we normally have around 5-10 students attending weekly lessons.

3. Who is your dance hero and why?

- Alyssa Glanville is my dance hero! I feel like she truly represent where this dance has come from and where it’s going. She also has this amazing presence on and off the dance floor that is super infectious! She’s so down to earth, but also so silly!

4. If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?

- Easy... Love on Top by the one and only Beyonce

5. What’s a must-have for you at competition? (Snack, clothing item, travel item, etc)

- I think three must haves at a dance event (excluding dance shoes, because duh) are a water bottle, cardigan, and extra socks!

6. What's your club's favorite song right now? (or you)

- My favorite song right now has to be Playlist by Kid Quill

The next event that their club will be going to together is Swingin’ New England!

MAY HIGHLIGHT: ANSWERED BY CLUB CAPTAIN ELENA NEWMARK (Pictured top right)

Questions:

1. How long ago did you start?

- A handful of us started the club in the fall of 2015 so this is our third full year! I started dancing WCS 4 years ago in Cambridge, MA when I first started going to The Dancing Fools’ Wednesday night dances.

2. On average, how many regular students come to class each week?

- We typically have between 20-30 people each week which is about 3 times more than our first year! We also now offer 4 levels of classes as opposed to the 1 when we first started.

3. What has been the most rewarding part of having the team?

- The most rewarding part of having this club has been watching the BU WCS community grow from zero. We had 15 club members attend BTP last month and many of them had never danced before joining this club. It’s amazing to be able to help grow this dance and watch so many new people fall in love with it. All of us who started the club 3 years ago came to WCS from ballroom but now we have BU dancers that are 100% Westie because of what we’ve been able to offer- it’s really cool!

4. What’s a funny moment that’s happened with your club at an event?

- A funny moment from BTP was when we had a newcomer who was going to compete and then changed his mind until our club’s Vice President encouraged him to do it anyways. After prelims he sat down and took off his number. When they were calling for semis they called his name and he wasn’t paying any attention until we all yelled at him to put on his number and get on the floor! He was so shocked and pumped- it was great, we’d never seen him so excited.

5. What's your club's favorite song right now?

- Bellyache by Billie Eilish

They are psyched for their next official club event to be Swingin’ New England in the fall (but don’t be surprised to see lots of them at Summer Hummer too)!

APRIL HIGHLIGHT: ANSWERED BY CLUB CAPTAIN NIC SHEPARD (Pictured top right)

Questions:

1. How long ago did you start?
- I started dancing in Boston my first year of college in 2014. After I transferred to Dartmouth I was really happy to find that there was an established club with even some familiar faces from various events! Dartmouth Swing Dance Club turned 10 years old this year and this March will mark seven semesters for me teaching with the club.

2. On average, how many regular students come to class each week?
- We have about 10-15 students who join us every week for both our beginner and intermediate lessons.

3. If your team could have any dance pro come teach a workshop, who would it be?
- While it’s really tough to choose among all the amazing pros out there, one pro that has really influenced the way I approach my dancing has been Arjay Centeno. A lot of the classes that I’ve taken with him have focused on just basic patterns but through the framework of some really dance changing, and sometimes life changing, philosophy. That’s something that I really admire and something that we strive for in our own lessons.

4. If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
- Beyond dancing both roles perfectly or having the judges always catch us for our best 15 seconds in competitions? Flying would be pretty cool. There’s some really beautiful scenery around Hanover and what better way could there be to get off campus every now and then?

5. What's your favorite song right now?
- Mayores by Becky G

The Dartmouth Swing Dance Club just enjoyed attending the Boston Tea Party event and can't wait to attend another event this year!
